Chicka Chicka Boom Boom Preschool Theme

My older two boys are back in school and I am back to doing preschool with my 4 year old.  I'm going to try and let him take the lead as to how often we do preschool.  I don't want either of us to get burned out so while we will have "big" days, most days will be pretty low key.

Today we talked about a favorite book, Chick Chicka Boom Boom.  It is a great time to review the alphabet.  My son is reading now so I thought he had all his letters and there sounds down pat, but as we were going through I realized he'd forgotten some so I am glad we did this so I can work on reminding him of every letter and it's sound.
I read the book to my son, then he read it to me.  Then we watched this video a couple of times.  It has such a catchy little tune to it.

Something that I want to work on this year with my son is having him practice writing his name properly.  This site will allow you to type in what you want traced and you can print it out, really helpful.
I hid alphabet cards around the house and had my son find them.  When he found them he had to tell me its name and the sound it made.  Then he wanted to hide them so I could find them and I told him the name name and sound.

Then we went through the alphabet cards and he found the letters to his name and spelled it out.  After that we counted how many letters are in his name.
Kinder Alphabet has some great Chicka Chicka Boom Boom printables including alphabet cards and a few activities like this one where you match the upper case letter with the lower case letter.
Since we were talking about the alphabet as well we also watched Leap Frog's Letter Factrory Movie.  This is a great movie for learning letter names and sounds.

Here are some more ideas for a Chicka Chicka Boom Boom Theme:

These links will give you a list of activities:

Letter E/Easter Eggs

Today we talked about the letter E and Easter Eggs!  This wrapped up going through the alphabet for the second time this preschool year.
Here is an egg shaped lacing card I made many years ago.  It has held up well.  I used cardstock, patterned paper, eyelets, a hole punch, yarn, and tape on the ends of the yarn.
3 Dinosaurs has some egg printables in her Easter Printable Pack.
This Reading Mama also has an Easter Pre-K pack with egg activities like the one below.
1+1+1=1 has an E is for egg pack that we used activities from.
Here is a printable sight word coloring page.
The big event was coloring eggs!  I decided to give a new method a try that I found on pinterest using crayons while the egg is still real warm.  My son had a good time.  I was worried about him hurting his hands since the egss were still hot so I had him wear gloves and it worked well.  Here is the link.
He had fun, but kind of got tired so after two eggs by himself I did a couple with him and then he asked his dad to draw on a couple.
Tomorrow will be our big Easter Preschool Day!

Y/Yak Preschool Theme

Today we talked about the letter Y and yaks.  It was a low-key easy day for us.  We used 1+1+1=1's yak printable pack.
Here is a cute yak craft using the letter Y.  My son wanted to paint instead of doing that particular craft so that's what he did instead.

Letter D/Ducks Preschool Theme

Today we talked about the letter D and Ducks!
We did activities from Letter D for Ducks printables.
We used these finger puppets to do "Five Little Ducks"  which can also be a finger play, song, and we have a book with the words as well.
We have a few more duck books, but these are the ones we read today. Five Little Ducks (that can go with the finger play), Little Quack, and the classic book Make Way for Ducklings.
We had a subscription to Zoobooks at one time and they had an edition with Ducks so we looked through that book.  I read a few things, but mostly my son looked at the pictures.
We also looked at National Geographic for Kids for more facts about ducks.

Letter K/Kites Preschool Theme

We talked about the letter K and kites today!  This is actually what we did for the letter k last time around, but I decided to do it again since it seems more like a Spring theme. Having said that I picked a day with next to no wind.  Oh well, we still had a good time.
We did a couple of activities from 2 Teaching Mommies Kite printable pack (my ink cartidge was low when I printed these off, they are much cuter than shown in my picture)
Here is a cute kite to color or in our case paint.
 Here is another coloring page.
I wanted to make a kite with my son, but I wanted to keep it basic using things we had around the house.  I found this idea to use a plastic grocery sack and string.  Like I mentioned earlier, it was not windy at all so we took turns running so we could make our own wind and lift our "kite" up.  My son thought it was a lot of fun so I consider it a success.

Today we talked about the letter Q and quails!
We used this coloring Q sheet from this pack
We used this letter q/quail pack for more activities.
Here is a Quail coloring page.
This is a free story about a quail that is cute  and can be colored.
We made a letter Q quail.  I think he turned out pretty cute.  You can see this idea and more alphabet crafts here.

Letter W/Worms Preschool Theme

My older boys have been out of school for Spring Break, but they are back in session now and we got right back into doing preschool at home.  Today we talked about the letter W and worms!
I wasn't cool enough to have any actual worms on hand so we watched several videos to help us learn a bit about worms and we also check out National Geographic Kids for some worm facts.
Here is a video of the book called Diary of a Worm by Jim Sheese.
Here is a video of a worm habitat.
Here is a video just showing worms moving about.
We did some activities from this Wacky Worm pack.
Including this cute stick worm puppet.
We had fun doing a finger play about worms.  This site includes the words as well as a flannel board story and a song about worms.

Wiggle Worms

Wiggle your worm fast; then wiggle it s-l-o-w.

Wiggle your worm high; then wiggle it down low.

Wiggle your worm on your shoulder; then wiggle it on your head.

Wiggle your worm along your arm; then wiggle it along your leg.

Wiggle your worm behind of you; then wiggle it in front.

Wiggle your worm on your nose, what a silly willy stunt!

Wiggle your worm on your toes, then wiggle it towards the sky.

Now wiggle your worm down to the ground; and wave a sad 'good-bye'.

We did a little W craft.  I had my son paint with yarn onto a letter w so it looked worm like.  Then he cut and glued pieces of the yarn onto the w. Similar to this idea.
Then we played with gummy worms and made a snack.  We crushed up oreos and mixed them with some chocolate pudding and put gummy worms in the cup.
And that was our wormy day!

Letter O/Ostrich Preschool Theme

Today we talked about the Letter O for Ostrich!
We did activities from 1+1+1=1's ostrich printable pack.
We looked at Ostrich facts and videos here.  We used parts of this ostrich craft, but used an o instead of the body.

Letter G/Green Preschool Theme

Today we talked about the letter G and the color green!  We won't be doing preschool on Monday so I thought this would be our tribute to St. Patrick's Day.
Over the Big Moon has a St. Patrick's Day pre-k printable pack.
My son made a "My Green Book" and helped me read it.
This St. Patrick's Day Preschool Pack has fun green and festive activities.
My File Folder has a "Love the Irish" file folder color matching game.
2 Teaching Mommies also has a St. Patrick's Day Pack worth looking at.

My son wanted to make a green caterpillar for a craft.  Here is his art work.
We also went on a "Green Hunt"  searching our house and outside for green things.  Here he found his Kermit the Frog.
He also has this blankie, green frog that my mom made him when he was born that he sleeps and snuggles with.

Letter F/Frog Preschool Theme

Today we talked about the letter F and frogs!
My son asked if we could read "I'm a Frog!" by Mo Willems.  It is a cute easy-reader story.  He helped me read it in fact.
We talked about the life cycle of a frog with this printable to help use as a visual.
We used many activities from this Frog in the Pond Preschool Pack.
2 Teaching Mommies has a Frog Unit printable Pack.
My husband helped us out by folding this simple origami frog.  It does a little hopping.
We sang "Five Green and Speckled Frogs" using these cute frogs.  We also went to Starfall and found the song there and did the letter F activities.
