The Very Hungry Caterpillar Preschool Theme

"The Very Hungry Caterpillar" by Eric Carle is one of our favorite books so of course we were both excited to have a preschool theme about it.
We read the book and watched the movie.  You can find it right now streaming on Netflix.  It is a short little movie, but fun.  I also retold the story using these felt board pieces.
You can find cute printables to go with this story like "The Hungry Caterpillar Cards and stick puppets below.

These sequencing cards are great to have your child help retell the story.
Here you will find a really cute Caterpillar Pack for free (again I hadn't replaced my colored ink cartridge which is why they are strange colors).
Here is a picture of my son doing one of the activities above.  It is a great way to go over the days of the week and retelling the story.
You can find this idea for feeding the caterpillar and a whole lot more here.
You could also watch Eric Carle reading the book himself here.

You can check out what we did for this theme in 2013 here and in 2010 here.

Check out more caterpillar ideas in my 2013 post here and at Confessions of a Homeschooler here.

Here is another printable pack for The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar Preschool Theme

Today we did "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" by Eric Carle theme.
My son loves this book and so it was an easy pick. There are millions of ideas that go along with this book.  Seriously, I was blown away with my little bit of searching.
We read through this story several ways.  In fact, I think we read it about a dozen times throughout the morning.  The first time I just read it to him with the book normally.  The next time we used these flannel board visuals.  He really enjoyed putting up the different pieces as I read the story.
Then I read the book again and he fed the caterpillar the different fruits as we went through the book.  This was cute and easy to make.  My son really enjoyed doing that.  I found the caterpillar and fruit here and then used a sandwich size baggie and cut a slit in the front of it. The link is full of ideas for this theme so you have to scroll a bit to get to this activity, but there are many others worth looking at along the way! Here is another version of doing the same activity.
We used these Story Sequencing Cards to recall what happened in the story.  My son took it a step further and pretended to be a caterpillar and acted out eating all the food as we went through.
Here is a little clip of him acting like a caterpillar as we went through what happened in the book.
He absolutely loved playing with these little stick puppets that we found here.
From the same link as above we got these Hungry Caterpillar Cards.  She also has lots of cute activities to go with this theme as well.
We also did activities from this caterpillar tot-book like these sizing caterpillars and butterflies.

My son painted this cute caterpillar and then I cut it and helped him glue it to some construction paper.
He also painted a butterfly.  He enjoys painting anything.
We also watched a little video of "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" which you can currently find on Netflix's instant watch list.  We also watched Eric Carle read the book here.

That is what we got to today.  We will be talking about caterpillars some more with the letter "C" so we might do some more caterpillar type activities. For now, here are some other links worth looking at to go along with this theme.
