Food Pyramid: Overview

I wanted to start teaching my children about why we should eat a variety of healthy foods and have treat only on occassion.  The food pyramid is a bit abstract to teach young children, but I thought I'd take a stab at it.  We are going to focus on different groups in the next couple of weeks.  That should be less abstract since they will be able to see the different foods.
Gathering Time:
Put blank pyramid up and explain that it is like a triangle (has three sides and corners)
Explain that we have a food pyramid to help us know how much of different kinds of foods to eat.
Put up Food Pyramid (for children) and point out that each color represents different kinds of foods (name each color and food)
Using a Large Pyramid and different pictures of various foods have child pick a food and help them decide which group it belongs in
Have child do something active (run around, jump)
We need food to live and to grow.  The foods that are good for our body we need a lot of because they are going to help us have more energy so we can  do fun things like run and jump without getting tired as fast.
Do a food pyramid memory game
Focus Activities:
Color food pyramid (number code each section with the right color)
Other Possibilities:
Make a fruit smoothie (my children LOVE fruit smoothies!)

This is something i would love to do with my boy as i'm having trouble getting him to understand we can't just have lollies for breakfast, lunch and dinner. How well did you kids take on the concept of the food pyramid? my boy is 3 years old and i'm not sure he's old enough yet.

I am not finished with this topic yet, but so far my oldest (nearly 5) has really gotten into it and seems to understand a decent amount of what I am teaching however, my 3 year old has not really been interested in it. I think the concepts are just too abstract for him at this point.

I know this was a while ago, but here's something I did. My girls are 5 and 3. I put up different color piece of laminated card stock on the refrigerator and wrote the suggested number of servings on them. Then I printed clip art of food we eat and laminated them. As we ate through the day, I had them put the pictures of the food we ate on the proper color. At the end of the day, we could look at what we ate and talk about what we needed to eat more or less of. We would still be doing this except my 1 year old started walking and pulled everything off the refrigerator.
